Quick Navigation
What you’ll need
Before you start, grab:
-
A soft brush or old toothbrush
-
A clean cloth
-
Warm (not hot) water
-
A small bowl or bucket
How to clean trainers by hand
If your trainers are delicate, suede, or have leather detailing, it’s best to wash them by hand.
-
Brush off dirt
Start by brushing off any loose mud or grit. A dry brush or an old toothbrush works perfectly.
-
Mix your cleaning solution
Add a small splash of Cedarwood Laundry Liquid to warm water. Our eco-friendly formula is plant-based and tough on dirt but gentle on fabrics - and it smells incredible too.
-
Scrub and wipe
Dip your brush into the solution and gently scrub the fabric, soles, and laces. Wipe away the foam with a damp cloth.
-
Rinse lightly
Don’t soak your trainers. A quick rinse under lukewarm water or a wipe with a clean damp cloth will do.
Can you wash trainers in the washing machine?
Yes - most fabric trainers can go in the washing machine. Just check the care label first.
Here’s how:
-
Remove the laces and insoles.
-
Pop your trainers in a laundry bag or pillowcase to protect them.
-
Use a cold or gentle cycle with a small amount of Wilton Cedarwood Laundry Liquid
-
Skip the spin if possible - it’s kinder to your trainers.
Our Cedarwood Laundry Liquid is perfect here. It’s biodegradable, vegan, and powered by plants - so you can clean your trainers without worrying about harsh chemicals.
How to dry trainers
Never tumble dry your trainers. It can warp the soles or damage the fabric.
Instead:
-
Stuff them with paper towels to help them keep their shape
-
Leave them to air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight
Airing them near a window works best.
Keep them fresher for longer
Once your trainers are clean, store them somewhere airy (not in a gym bag). To keep them smelling fresh between washes, pop a small cotton bag of bicarbonate of soda inside overnight - it’ll absorb any odours.
And next time they need a refresh, you know what to reach for: Wilton Cedarwood Laundry Liquid. It’s a cult favourite for a reason.
